The dawn of the e-commerce boom has created in its wake a spin off of sorts, in the form of the Domain name buying and selling gold rush.

The muli-million dollar sales of the domain names "business.com", "computer.com" and others, have fueled the wild fires spreading the domain mania. Almost every common word in the english language dictionary has been registered as a .com level domain with the hopes of cashing in big time, when some new ebusiness start up decides it needs the name and simply can't live without it. Well it would be nice if it worked that way and maybe there are a few bucks to be made in the registering of domain names and reselling to the highest bidder, but unless you have a superior and unique name such as the famous business.com .....and there are very few of them left....then expecting to make your first million at this game may be a bit of a dellusion. It seems the biggest bucks are being made by the actual registering companies that you pay your forty or fifty dollars to for the privilage of owning a domain for one year. But you never know, as the ecommerce giant grows and the supply of available good domain names starts to dry up, then that domain name you have been holding on to for a couple of years may turn some hefty profit. So seeing as there may be some hope after all of securing somewhat of a profitable investement, lets look at buying our first domain name as a future investement in cyber-space property.

There are many domain registration service sites available on the net now and a simple search on one of the search engines should provide you with a place to start your quest for that perfect domain name. Most provide a search for at least three of the most popular level domains, .com, .net, and .org.By far the most sought after is the .com domain name although with the decrease in availability of good .com names, the other two are gaining popularity as well. The .com and .net levels are usually associated with commercial sites and the .org is usually associated with non-profit organizations. A good .com name associated with a business gives it a good presence on the net and provides a sense of professionalism to the prospective website visitor. It is also the most recognized of the three and all things considered is probably why the majority of the great ones are already registered. When searching for a great domain name to register it's important to keep a few guidlines in mind. The shorter the name the better as it is conceived as being easier to remember and of course spell, which would be very important when trying to remember and input the name for locating the site on the net. How easily and readily the name can be associated with a paticular service or product is also of great importance. Also for the best bang for your buck it is most desirable to obtain the .com level domain.

As I mentioned earlier most if not all of the great one name .com names are gone now so you will have to be a little creative and try to think of some catchy two word combinations as long as they are not too long.

If you think you have found a good name that is not registered already it will probably cost you around fifty dollars or so to register it in your name for a year. You can register for up to two ten years if you like and if you are willing to pay the extra fee charged. In any case it will cost you a yearly renewal fee of around thirty dollars if you wish to hang on to the registration for another year. If you are registering a name for the purpose of reselling it then it would be a good idea to get the value of the name professionally appraised to insure you don't short change yourself or ask outrageously high prices and end up outpricing yourself out of the market altogether.

Professional appraisal services are provided on alot of the registration sites and usually cost around fifteen or twenty dollars.

So now you have the one and only illusive domain name that everybody would like to acquire and you wish to advertise your good fortune to prospective domain name buyers. There are quite a few of domain name brokers on the net now that specialize in the selling of domain names for clients and listing yours with one is one way to start. They usually charge a percentage of the selling price for their services and may also have other stipulations they require of you so it's best to read the fine print before listing. Creating your own website, maybe with one of the free website providers, and advertising your name or names for sale is another good idea.

The more you promote and advertise, the better chance you will have in securing a deal.

There are already thousands of available domains for sale on the net now so take heart if it takes a while to sell yours.

If you believe in the name that you registered and you are willing to pay the yearly renewal registration fees, then over time it may develop into a much sought after and valuable investment.
