Yoga for stress reduction

How the practice of yoga can be used for stress reduction. It can also relax and stregnthen the mind and body.

While some confuse the practice of yoga with eastern temples and pretzel poses, the actual practice of yoga can be done by ordinary people of any ability virtually anywhere. One of the main benefits of yoga includes improved mood and stress reduction. The regular practice of yoga provides stress reduction and relaxation in several ways, mentally, physically and spiritually.

Mentally, the practice of yoga requires some dedication and discipline. This provides a distraction from anxious thoughts. Once you have the moves down, try combining your yoga practice with meditation including positive affirmations to enhance the experience of a “mental vacation.” Many people report that they perform better at work if they take time to refresh their mind and "get the blood flowing" with a few moments of yoga.

Physically, yoga stretches muscles made tense during the day due to activities such as sitting at a computer terminal for hours. Simple poses that stretch, accompanied by inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth, provide needed oxygen to relax tight muscle tissue and help cleanse the lymph system of toxins.

Spiritually, Yoga is considered a means to connect with the divine. By becoming calm and centered, a pathway to spiritual growth is opened. Many combine yoga with prayer to the God or divine being of their understanding. Problems that seem overwhelming can be “given over” to a power greater than oneself. This is especially true of Karma Yoga, a type of yoga practice, which centers on communication with the divine.

Simple poses can be performed at your desk or cubicle at work, such as the lower back stretch which involves sitting in your chair with your legs wide apart and bending forward at the hips allow your body to relax, with your head dropped to relax your neck. There are many poses for stay at home moms, adopted from how children relax such as the dead bug (on your back with feet in the air), which you can do at home on the floor while the children are napping (or with the kids if the won’t nap). Yoga can be performed virtually anytime you need a break.

Any person, regardless of physical condition, can perform yoga. However, as with any form of exercise, it is best to consult with your doctor before undertaking anything new. There are simple beginner poses that are easy and fun to do. Some include using props like a chair, cushions or mats and a wall to lean against. Books and tapes are available to assist a person to try beginner poses in the privacy and comfort of your own home.

Whatever method you choose, it is important to note that regular practice of yoga is the key to stress reduction. Some prefer to practice yoga first thing in the morning, to start the day refreshed with a clear mind. Some practice at the end of the day to unwind the stresses built up over the course of the day. Accessories for yoga practice can include scented candles and music. Yoga can be practiced indoors or out, wherever is most comfortable and practical. Whenever the time or method regularity is important. Find a scheduled time to take for yoga practice, and stick to it. The rewards are numerous and definitely worth the time and practice.
